This course discusses the current opportunities for electrical contractors to do business with the federal government. It explains the qualification requirements (bonding, etc.) and the registration process. I review the types of bids available and explain how to review, estimate and submit a bid. We will discuss pricing, payment methods and electronic invoicing. I explain the Bacon Davis act and prevailing wage, union personnel and operating within federal government and OSHA (safety) regulations. We discuss project management methods and cover quality assurances along with contract liability issues and corrective measures. Additionally, I cover opportunities (i.e. special programs set aside) for various types of disadvantaged and minority owned companies.

Business Plans – Loan Qualifications and Sources of Capital

This course covers the basics of a business plan (including the need for one, and the basic structure). I will outline a Business Plan specifically designed for an Electrical Contracting business, and we will discuss bank loans and other sources of revenues. We will also design a comparative balance sheet and discuss how to analyze a column chart.

Cash Flow Management – Maintaining and Selling your Business

In this course, I discuss the importance of cash flow management, and detail the various methods of management and cash flow projections. I show and analyze, through the use of flow charts, the relationship between cash flow management / projections and accounts receivables and payables. We will examine the different methods of customer retention and the importance of customer service.

I will discuss exit strategies for electrical contractors, and detail the procedures of selling a contracting business. We will review methods of business valuations and cash flow multiples, and we will prepare a Comparative Income (profit & loss) statement, along with a graphical representation of a hypothetical electrical contracting company.

I will discuss ways to locate and screen business brokers, their contracts, methods of operation and payment terms. Additionally, we will review financing options and terms of sale

Estimating Methods - Variations of Work - Engineered Blueprints

This course covers different estimating methods (T & M / Flat Rate systems / Custom Systems / Computer Estimating) and explains how and when to apply each of them.

Additionally, we will analyze the different types of customers and work encountered, and discuss how to design a custom estimation system. We will cover Architectural / Engineered Blueprints and how to read them (with plan legends and notes), and we perform an exercise in plan take-off.

I will discuss how and when to qualify bids, and also contract liability issues.

Marketing Strategies - Advertising and Forming Strategic Partnerships with other Trades

This course covers marketing strategies for electrical contractors, where to advertise (along with various examples of ads), direct mailing, networking and web sites (and how to design them).

I will review methods of when and how to assess advertising costs and we will analyze examples of advertising cost / returns.

I will discuss the importance of forming strategic alliances with other trades and we will review opportunities for electrical contractors to incorporate these trades within their own business, and how to act as a general contractor.
